Debtors who find themselves unable to meet their financial obligations will often seek help from credit counseling companies.  While some companies offer legitimate, helpful advice, many are guilty of giving improper advice, engaging in deceptive practices, charging excessive fees and violating their non-profit status.  Before consulting with a credit counseling company, check with the Better Business Bureau or Chamber of Commerce.  If you are presented with documents, have an attorney review them before you sign.
